Audio Technica AT-VM95E/H ($99) - While doing your research on some of the turntables, you might find some of them come with cartridges, and a few with Audio Technica specifically - like the VPI Player which comes with this exact one. Audio Techinca has a range of options from $49 to $5k. For our purposes here, a good one to start with this this one. The dual magnet cartridge has an elliptical stylus and aluminum cantilever for clear sound. It’s easy to install with just two screws and works with AT-VMN95 replacement styli, and is compatible with any ½"-mount headshell for most turntables.

JICO J44A-7 ($119.99) - For anyone who used to use a Shure M44-7 (RIP) you know that it was a sad day when they stopped making them. But JICO answered the call with this almost replica of the OG. The J44 is a high-quality replacement, delivering powerful bass and smooth, balanced sound. Perfect for DJs, it has a higher tracking force for better performance and includes a synthetic diamond stylus for great value. Handmade in Japan, it features an aluminum cantilever and comes with mounting hardware (but no headshell wires). It's a great alternative to finding old M44-7 stock.

Ortofon 2M ($99-$695) - When it comes to Hifi options we love the 2Ms, Red ($99), Blue ($189), Bronze ($429), and Black ($695) High-End Cartridges (pictured). This Ortofon series offers cartridges for all needs, the Red is an affordable entry-level option, the Blue adds clarity with a nude elliptical stylus, the Bronze a greater tonal accuracy with a fine-line stylus, and the Black delivers the most detailed sound with a Shibata stylus. Ortofon also came out with the DJ VNL ($139.99) which is still in their suite of quality products but with a footprint and feel more like the JICO. If you prefer a different longer profile, we suggest checking out their Mix Concorde MKII ($110.99) or for a Hifi option the Concorde Elite ($439.99).

Preamps:

Rolls Phono Preamp VP29 ($59) - This compact preamp delivers precision and clarity, featuring 42 dB gain, RIAA equalization for accurate vinyl playback, and a wide frequency response of 20 Hz - 20 kHz. Bellari VP 130 Tube Phono Preamp (VP130 MK2)($275) - A compact phono preamp with a built-in headphone amplifier, featuring tube circuitry for warm, pure sound, it includes separate volume controls for headphones and outputs, plus a mute switch. Built with a durable metal casing and made in the USA, it supports MM cartridges and high-output MC cartridges. With gold-plated RCA connections, a 1/4" headphone jack, and adjustable cartridge load capacitance, it’s a versatile and reliable choice. Perfect for introducing the "tube sound" to your audio system.

These are all in our price range, but if you have more money to splurge you might also want to check out the Music Hall PA2.2 ($499.99) or the infamous McIntosh MP100 ($2,000) - both preamps for moving magnet and coil cartridges, with USB output and headphone amps.
