The Basics: Picking Your Gear

There’s no one-size-fits-all setup for the vinyl collector, everyone has their own preferences, and environments that they are enjoying records in! To help you find what works best for you, we’ve collected recommendations from our Board of Directors on their favorite products, along with insights from Jenn, Founder of Women in Vinyl, and Robyn, Executive Board Member and Podcast Co-Host. They’ve tested a variety of products and are sharing their experiences. Need tips on usage or setup? We’ve got you covered.

Understanding Your Record Player

Turntables come in two main options: direct-drive and belt-drive. Your record sits on what is called a platter. Direct-drive platters spin directly on the motor, making them great for DJs who need to be able to adjust speed, or set up a track to start on just the right spot. Belt-drive turntables have the motor off to the side, which reduces noise and is preferred by audiophiles. There is a literal belt around the platter to the motor which then will need to be moved to adjust for 33 vs 45.

When it comes to the other parts of your turntable, the cartridge contains the needle (or stylus) that reads the record’s grooves, and the tonearm holds the cartridge in place.

A preamp boosts the audio signal, allowing it to reach your amplifier or receiver. Not all turntables need a preamp and you should check when purchasing one if it is built in or not.  Normally record players that are all in one (like your suitcase turntables) have a built in preamp, where most other turntables will require one.

For simplicity, you might connect directly to powered speakers or use a turntable with blue tooth or built-in speakers.

Turntables we love:

For the Beginner:

Audio Technica AT-LP70XBT (belt drive) ($249) - This turntable allows Bluetooth-enabled speakers or wired systems using its built-in switchable phono preamp. It features an audio techinica cartridge. The anti-resonance chassis and external AC adapter ensure clear, noise-free audio.

Whether you prefer direct drive or belt drive, these Audio-Technica turntables are ideal for beginners. Affordable and reliable, they're perfect for testing the waters or enjoying the hobby long-term. The direct drive model offers an intro to the Technics 1200 at a lower price, and Audio-Technica provides all your starter essentials, from cartridges to cables.

For the Tried and True:

Technics SL-1200MK7 (direct drive) ($1,099.99) - A new standard for DJs and long-term listeners, this evolution of the iconic SL-1200 offers audiophile sound, precise rotation, and powerful torque. It features a newly developed direct-drive motor, advanced chassis, and customizable digital motor controls. Built to last, this turntable is a Women in Vinyl favorite, with many of us still using original 1200s in perfect working condition.

For the Aesthetic (but not just):

Pro-ject Debut Carbon EVO Turntable ($599) - This turntable delivers exceptional sound with a sleek, minimalist design. Featuring a carbon-fiber tonearm, Sumiko Rainier cartridge, precision steel platter with TPE damping, and a vibration-isolating motor system, it ensures superb performance. Electronic speed control and height-adjustable feet enhance usability, while multiple finishes and upgrade options, including balanced connectivity, cater to vinyl enthusiasts. A benchmark in affordable high-end turntables.

U-Turn Orbit Plus or Special Turntable ($519-$699 - depending on finish) - Exceptional performance with electronic speed control for 33/45 RPM and an advanced motor controller for precise speed accuracy. The magnesium armtube ensures accurate tracking and low distortion. Featuring an Ortofon 2M Red cartridge, elliptical diamond stylus, and a grooved acrylic platter for enhanced sound and stability for dynamic playback. The external belt drive reduces motor noise, and a silicone belt for speed stability. Manual speed change and a cue lever make it easy to use, perfect for audiophiles and beginners alike.

For the Audiophile:

VPI Player Turntable ($2,200) - A premium turntable with a built-in phono preamp and headphone amplifier for seamless listening. Features belt-drive operation, aluminum platter, 9" aluminum tonearm, and pre-mounted Ortofon 2M Red Cartridge. Includes RCA outputs, a headphone jack with volume control, and easy setup. Rega Planar 6 Turntable ($2,895) - This award-winning audiophile turntable features an ultra-lightweight foam core chassis with a scratch-resistant Polaris laminate, inspired by the RP8 and RP10 designs. Equipped with a handmade tonearm, dual-layer smoked glass platter, and pre-mounted Ania MC cartridge, it ensures exceptional sound quality. Includes a 24V low-noise motor paired with anti-vibration control. It comes with a smoked dustcover and redesigned feet for enhanced vibration damping. A high-performance turntable at its price point.

For the Vinyl Lover on the Go:

Neumark PT01 ($100) - Play and record anywhere with this durable, portable turntable. It features a built-in speaker, pitch control, and plays 33 1/3, 45, and 78 RPM records. Convert records to digital with free EZ Vinyl Converter software, for Mac and PC. Includes a cartridge, RCA and headphone outputs, USB connectivity, a protective dust cover with handle, and battery or AC power options.

Cartridges: The Needle’s Impact

Cartridges are crucial—they hold the needle that plays your record. Different cartridges are suited for various needs, from high-end audiophile setups to DJ gear. Some turntables come with them, but because they can vary in how your record sounds, you may want to find the one you prefer depending on your listening environment. You will likely want to upgrade or replace your cartridge at some point due to wear etc.

Some of our favorites are:

Audio Technica AT-VM95E/H ($99) - While doing your research on some of the turntables, you might find some of them come with cartridges, and a few with Audio Technica specifically - like the VPI Player which comes with this exact one. Audio Techinca has a range of options from $49 to $5k. For our purposes here, a good one to start with this this one. The dual magnet cartridge has an elliptical stylus and aluminum cantilever for clear sound. It’s easy to install with just two screws and works with AT-VMN95 replacement styli, and is compatible with any ½"-mount headshell for most turntables.

JICO J44A-7 ($119.99) - For anyone who used to use a Shure M44-7 (RIP) you know that it was a sad day when they stopped making them. But JICO answered the call with this almost replica of the OG. The J44 is a high-quality replacement, delivering powerful bass and smooth, balanced sound. Perfect for DJs, it has a higher tracking force for better performance and includes a synthetic diamond stylus for great value. Handmade in Japan, it features an aluminum cantilever and comes with mounting hardware (but no headshell wires). It's a great alternative to finding old M44-7 stock.

Ortofon 2M ($99-$695) - When it comes to Hifi options we love the 2Ms, Red ($99), Blue ($189), Bronze ($429), and Black ($695) High-End Cartridges (pictured). This Ortofon series offers cartridges for all needs, the Red is an affordable entry-level option, the Blue adds clarity with a nude elliptical stylus, the Bronze a greater tonal accuracy with a fine-line stylus, and the Black delivers the most detailed sound with a Shibata stylus. Ortofon also came out with the DJ VNL ($139.99) which is still in their suite of quality products but with a footprint and feel more like the JICO. If you prefer a different longer profile, we suggest checking out their Mix Concorde MKII ($110.99) or for a Hifi option the Concorde Elite ($439.99).

Amplifiers and Receivers: Boosting Your Sound

Basic turntables can connect directly to speakers and headphones via a headphone jack, but for a richer vinyl experience, you'll need an amplifier or receiver. Receivers often include a phono preamp, which boosts the signal for better sound. If your receiver doesn’t have a phono input, you’ll need a standalone preamp.

Once you move on from a suitcase like turntables, you will need a phono preamp. When you get to that stage, look for amplifiers and receivers that feature a "phono" input. If you purchase a receiver without a built-in phono preamp, you'll need to buy a separate one.

There are many options here, from budget-friendly picks to the $600 Marantz SR4023 to high-end models like the $3,000 Parasound Halo Integrated Amplifier.

With gold-plated RCA connections, a 1/4" headphone jack, and adjustable cartridge load capacitance, it’s a versatile and reliable choice. With built-in Bluetooth, it allows easy wireless listening, via headphones or speakers, while maintaining excellent sound quality. Marantz’s HDAM SA3 circuitry ensures dynamic, clear sound, while its high-quality components enhance performance. A respected name in high-end audio, Marantz offers exceptional gear, both new and vintage, starting around $500.

Denon AVR-S970H ($799) - Experience immersive 3D audio with the AVR-S970H receiver. Perfect for medium-sized rooms, it supports setups with Dolby Atmos and DTS:X for rich, cinematic sound. With HEOS® Built-in, stream music wirelessly and connect to HEOS-enabled speakers throughout your home. Key features include 7.2 channels, 90 watts per channel, six HDMI inputs, and support for 8K Ultra HD. All that to say this would more than do the trick for any turntable setup and your entire audio home system.

Now back to next steps...

Connecting Everything: The Nuts and Bolts

Setting up your system isn’t as complicated as it sounds. For a suitcase turntable (not our recommendation for the long term listener) you can just plug it in and listen via built in speakers.  The next and more recommended entry-level turntable, like your Audio-Technica AT-LP60, you just need to connect the turntable to your receiver or speakers.  Plug in the turntable, plug the RCA cables into an input in the back of a stereo receiver or amplifier and then into the receiver. These types of turntables have phono preamps, so you do not need a receiver with a “phono” input.

If you’re using our collective favorite turntable, a Technics 1200, or move to higher-end turntables like a Pro-Ject, or VPI it will require a bit more setup, including connecting a ground wire to avoid annoying hums. Don’t be scared of this though, it’s really not as daunting as it seems! Since these have no built-in phono preamp, you need to either plug your RCA cables into the phono input on the back of a receiver / amp, or simply into a preamp, and then plug the other end of the cables into the regular RCA input on a receiver.

At the higher end stage, some turntables also have a thin wire called a ground wire, you will have to attach this to a screw on your preamp or receiver.

But of course… always read and follow the instructions!

For Cables try out:

Hosa CRA-201AU Dual RCA Cable ($8.95) - Hosa cables are an affordable and trusted option for their price, durability, and reliable performance. Designed with attention to detail, they deliver high-quality sound for any audio setup while being a true workhorse. Backed by a lifetime warranty for U.S. customers, they ensure long-lasting value. These are dual male RCA to male RCA gold connectors and is 3.3 feet long—perfect for your audio needs.

Mogami Gold RCA-RCA Cable ($44.95) - Mogami Gold cables are the top choice for audio professionals worldwide, known for their superior clarity, low noise, and reliable performance. Trusted by engineers and musicians for decades, these cables use oxygen-free copper for optimal transparency and feature an ultra-high-density spiral shield to minimize signal loss. With a lifetime warranty, Mogami Gold ensures durability and high-quality sound. Ideal for both digital and analog use, this 75-ohm RCA cable provides crystal-clear signal transfer and is built to last. Note that the price is for one single RCA, meaning to hook anything up you'd need to buy two equalling about $90!

Setting Up Your Turntable: Adjusting for Optimal Playback

When setting up your turntable, two key adjustments need to be made: the counterweight, located at the base of the tonearm, and your anti-skate, i.e. the tracking force, which is the downward pressure applied to the stylus. Again, we are talking about turntables that aren’t plug and play. And while this part might seem tricky, fine-tuning these settings will create the best listening experience.

The counterweight is responsible for controlling the downward or "tracking" pressure on the stylus. If there’s too little pressure you might be emailing the label to tell the pressing plant they messed up, because your needle is skipping along the surface.  On the flipside, too much pressure could damage both your records and the stylus.

To find the correct tracking force, start by "zeroing" the counterweight. This means adjusting it so that the tonearm is just balanced, floating between the up and down positions. Once this is done, fine-tune the weight to the recommended tracking force, which is specified in grams, and can be found in those instructions we recommended reading above (...go check, we’ll wait).

The anti-skate dial is used to balance the horizontal forces that act on the tonearm during playback. This prevents the stylus from skipping and is often set to match the tracking force value.

Speaker Setup: Getting the Best Sound

Setting up your speakers can be easy, especially if you have powered speakers that don’t require extra connections. For other speaker setups, you’ll need to correctly connect the speaker wires—matching the red (positive) and black (negative) connectors to both the speakers and the amplifier. Correct polarity (the correct alignment of the positive (+) and negative (–)) ensures that the speakers are working together for the best sound.

Speaker placement is also important for getting the best sound. To avoid muffled sound, keep your speakers away from walls and corners. However, if you want extra bass, you can place them closer to walls. For the clearest stereo effect, position yourself in the middle of an imaginary triangle formed by your two speakers.

For powered speakers or basic stereo systems, connecting the speakers is usually straightforward. If you're working with older equipment or high-end speakers that rely on the amplifier for power, you’ll need to strip the ends of the speaker wires to expose about ¾" of copper. Then, connect the wires to the terminals on the back of your speakers. This may take a little finagling at first, but it also is not as scary as it seems.
