How did you get into your industry / What motivated you?

My lifelong obsession with record collecting and music. I’m fortunate to have been able to turn a passion into a business that I love.

What is a day in the life like?

Nothing starts without my morning coffee. When I get to the shop I start by putting out the new used vinyl. Then I tidy up the shop, and get ready to price new records. I basically price records, buy records that people bring in to sell, all while having fun and talking with all my regulars that come in every day to chat about music and life. It’s really fun.

Favorite sale / relationship made from behind the counter?

I have too numerous to mention. I’m fortunate to have so many repeat customers and my regulars that come in every week to sit and talk. They have become my friends. They call me their “vinyl bartender” They are very special to me.

In your opinion what has been the coolest thing to come through your shop / thing you had to keep / almost couldn't put out for sale:

Haha! This is the struggle every day! You should see my collection, over 4000 titles. I keep a lot of Jazz and all OG Betty Davis albums.

What has been / is the most difficult part of your job?

Not keeping all the records.

What has been the craziest experience that has happened at the shop?

People camping out for 20 hours for RSD is crazy in an awesome way. One of the most exciting was when a couple brought in boxes of OG 80’s/90s metal to sell, well over 100 records. All in perfect condition. That was a good day.

What advice do you have for someone wanting to get into pursuing what you're doing?

Never say no to a dig. There are treasures to be found...

Protect your back! Records are heavy. Be prepared to dig in some dirty, and unusual places. It’s always an adventure. Never say no to a dig. There are treasures to be found.

What types of things are happening in your industry / with vinyl that you're excited or worried about?  i.e. innovation, or trends you're seeing.

I’m worried about new vinyl pricing. It’s getting more and more expensive and becoming harder for people to begin or continue collecting. That’s why I try to prioritize and focus on stocking used records. I’m excited about reissues that are coming out. Long, out of print titles are being repressed.

Are you a vinyl collector yourself?  What drew you to it?

Yes! I’ve been collecting since I was a child. Music has been my passion for my whole life!

Who has been influential to you and your growth as a professional in this industry?

My customers are the reason I continue to grow. Without them small businesses can’t succeed. The collectors, the music fans, the people that come just to hang out and talk. They are my influences.

Anything else you want to share? If not, tell us what you're listening to right now?

I’m all over the place, but jazz is my passion. I’m also a lover of jazz fusion, funk and new wave.
